So you’re going away for the weekend, huh? That’s awesome! I have a question though. Do you know what you’re gonna pack and take with you?
Let’s be honest, the mix of being comfortable, looking great and feeling amazing in what you have on, is not simple. There’s a strategy and formula to it. Once you plug in the variables to the formula that works best for you, you can hit the mark each time you get dressed.
Below are my tips on what to pack for a weekend getaway. Feel free to mix in your own personal style preferences when choosing your items.
We’re gonna start with an easy theme that will apply throughout this process: KEEP IT SIMPLE. Don’t complicate matters. You can turn any outfit into what you need it to be so don’t stress over the basics. That’s the easy part.
Versatility will make packing easy and it will keep your carry-on reasonably sized.
DRESS OR LONG SKIRT
I call this my “throw-on option” – with this option you want to pay attention to fabric. Nobody wants to worry about ironing, but nobody wants to walk around wrinkled. Fabrics that don’t wrinkle or that have a print that conceals wrinkles is what you’re looking for.
TIP: take the dress and ball it up in your hand. Hold it for 2-3 minutes. Open it up and see if it fits the bill. If it’s a mess, grab another one and test it out. Keep going until you find one that won’t wrinkle up on you.
A full on flowy dress or a skirt with a nice top both work as your daytime look while on a weekend trip. For you budget conscious shoppers, I made a video on how to find cheap dresses at Forever 21 and make them work for the grown woman. TANK TOPS (spaghetti straps)
One of the most important staples in a wardrobe is a spaghetti strap tank top. These things come in handy everywhere from work to play to digging weeds out of the backyard. Tanks go underneath any and everything and they’re dirt cheap.
TIP: pick up tank tops in 3 to 4 colors for the season. Always get a white one and a black one. Find a fit you like. Some are cut higher under the arms than others. Try a few and make note of the brand so you know which cut you can pick up without needing to try them on each time you buy.
Don’t want to wear a bra under your dress? Guess what? You can throw on a spaghetti strap tank and keep it moving! You can put a tank under a blazer with a long skirt and look great. Add a tank top to shorts and throw a blazer over it and BOOM you’re ready to go into stores and restaurants and not look like you just got off a shipwrecked boat.
If you’re on the right trip, there’s sun involved. That means you wanna keep cool. You also want to be comfortable. Not everybody is comfortable with their arms exposed. If you’re part of the covered arms ministry, try this style top and plug it in for the spaghetti strap tank mentioned above or simply add it on top of the tanks.
TIP: Look for well-constructed tops with small meshing. Poorly constructed tops with large holes are going to be more headache than they’re worth in the end.
Crochet & Mesh tops in neutral colors will make getting dressed super easy. You’ll still be cool. You’ll still get the sun rays on your skin and you will feel comfortable and be able to enjoy yourself without worrying about your clothes.
You want to be comfortable, look great and feel amazing!
Even though you’re on vacation, you will still likely go into a nice establishment for an evening meal or two. You don’t want to walk in barefoot and dusty. Pulling yourself together doesn’t have to kill the relaxed vibe of a weekend trip.
TIP: Find a linen blazer or one made from a lightweight material. Fold it inside out before you fold it and put it into your luggage to help minimize wrinkling.
A structured top will tighten up any look. It adds an element of polish to your look. Go for a pastel or light color. A light color along with an appropriate fabric will keep it in vacation mode. Blazers are good for an evening out. You can still wear a nice flowy dress or skirt and even a pair of shorts, but by adding the blazer you will look and feel more put together.
When I say dress, I really just mean shorts that have structure to them. The print and cut you choose can vary and it will vary depending on what you feel good in and what lengthy you go for. Even though the dream is to only lie by the water, every moment of your weekend getaway won’t be spent at the pool or on the beach. A nice pair of dressy shorts are great for walking around, shopping and browsing.
TIP: Go for a lightweight fabric. Also, choose a print that is appropriate for the season. Gingham is a great choice because you style it the same way you would a solid colored item. Make sure the fabric has some give or that you get a size that allows some wiggle room around the thighs and butt.
Dressy shorts, a blazer and a tank top are basically the items you’d put together for a weekend getaway business casual suit. To make it less dressy, pair the shorts with a tank top and throw the mesh top over it and you’re ready to go!
This one needs no explanation. I call it the “you never know” item in your bag. You just always need a pair of jeans. I’d suggest a pair of mom jeans because they fit so well and are not full length which means you won’t be too hot.
TIP: Mom jeans can be styled up and look amazing. Don’t be discouraged. For ideas on how to choose the right pair and how to add your own style to them, watch my video. I promise you’ll have a change of heart.
A tank top, mesh top, and t-shirt will all work with a pair of jeans. You can throw your bathing suit on underneath too. Or if you’re wearing a bikini, put your jeans over it and rock out or put your mesh top over it and head out for the day.
Summertime sneakers. That’s my take on espadrilles. They come in a million styles, heel heights, colors, price points and everything else. Comfort is on 10 with these and they’re super easy to throw in a carry on or hobo bag.
TIP: Walk around in them in the store before you buy. Make sure they have enough give for your preferred level of comfort. If you’ll be wearing them when you get back from your trip, invest in a well-constructed pair so that they last. A neutral colored pair will make them more versatile and easy to style.
If you don’t mind straps, espadrilles that tip up are really cute and fun to style. Don’t feel like the only espadrilles are the uber popular Chanel styled ones. There are even espadrille slides now. So have some fun choosing.
You’re on a weekend getaway. Bring a pair of sandals. DUH! They should be pretty, comfortable and they should make you happy when you put them on. Nuff said. Moving on…
Great sandals should not get wet. When you leave your sandals in the hotel room and take your pool slides to the pool and beach, they don’t get wet.
Pool slides are like the new leggings. They have managed to wiggle their way out of the area of fashion where they belong and they’ve come into the mainstream area of people’s wardrobes. What this means for you when packing for a weekend getaway is that you have so many more options that you would have before this trend took off.
TIP: Make sure they fit well and aren’t too slippery on the bottom. Some slides are designed to make a fashion statement and to be worn everywhere EXCEPT around water. Those are not the slides you want for the pool and beach. Find a proper pair of slides that are made to be around water and search for a fit that doesn’t rub against any odd area of your foot.
Honestly, I would just go to the outlet and pick up a more feminine pair of pool slides. If you like the thong style, grab a pair of those. If not, you can always get the slide ons with some flower details or whatever print you find appealing.
Not too high. Not too low. Do NOT bring kitten heels. Those things are the devil! And they’re ugly. Just plain ugly. You do want a nice pair of simple strappy heels. Strappy heels and a blazer can quickly take your flowy dress from daytime casual to sexy date night appropriate.
TIP: I like a gold pair. Black is good for a city look, but on vacation light pastels and gold give a vibe that screams sun and sand. Take a pair of inserts if you’re concerned about comfort or walking in heels.
Sleep shirts and PJ short sets are easy go-to’s in my book. What you wear to bed is not a major concern, however, when packing you do want to account for the bit of space these items will take up in your carry-on.
TIP: Go to target and grab a sleep shirt and PJ short set. They’re cheap, accessible and very soft. Wash them before your trip and then who cares if they don’t retain their shape or the fabric doesn’t feel as soft 6 months from now? You spent $20.00 to not have to think about sleepwear for a weekend. It’s worth it.
A nice, soft fabric set that has a pullover top and not too cheeky bottoms is perfect. Buttons and zips complicate something that does not need to be complicated. The theme is easy breezy throw on … and off. A simple monochromatic set will work just fine. Unless you’re into Mickey Mouse. If so, go for it!
And that my friends, is what to pack for a weekend getaway! Enjoy the sun, sand and sex you have and come back home refreshed and ready to tackle the world.
