Getting Your evenings on track: How to develop an evening routine you can maintain
If you’ve been feeling like you simply can’t get anything done after you come home in the evenings and all your big plans that you had during the day have basically culminated into mindlessly eating Lucky Charms while bingeing on Orange is the New Black, then this post is for you. Believe it or not, it is possible to develop an evening routine you can maintain.
Sometimes gaining control of your life can be as easy as getting a bit more organized, and the simplest way to do that is to get yourself into a routine. An evening routine will help you prioritize what you need to do and also make sure you get to do what you want to do. Now a routine isn’t meant to make you rigid or inflexible— we all know life happens which will throw things off from time to time, but having a routine to fall back on when life gets hectic is a major, major key.
Here are four quick tips to get you thinking about your own evening routine!
- Bedtime, baby
The most important part of your routine is ensuring you have a cut-off time. If you determine the very latest you plan to go to sleep, then you know how to priotise the rest of your evening. The important is making sure you stick to it (yes, even if you are mid-Netflix binge— you need your 8 hours!)
- Lists are your friend
Take advantage of the notes app on your phone and detail what it is you’d like to accomplish each evening. It might be going to the gym and cooking dinner or taking time to meditate and read. Everyone’s routine will differ but the point is to document it!
- Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize
Once you have your list, number them in order of priority. Take special note of your “must-do’s”, and make sure you do those first. That way, if you don’t get to everything, at least you’ve completed the important stuff.
- Take time for yourself
This might seem obvious but it actually isn’t— sometimes we get so caught up in what we have to do that we don’t do things that bring us actual peace of mind and enjoyment. We all have our personal battles that we face every day, and that is why self-care is so important and should always be included in your evening routine. You deserve it, don’t you?
