How to add hold to short styles. In this post I’m going to tell you guys how you can add hold to short styles using hairspray. There are other holding products available, but for today, I’m going to focus on hairspray.
Creating a style is only one step in the process. Once it’s done, you want to get the most life out a style as possible. Things like holding products and how you wrap and curl your hair, have a lot to do with the longevity of your styles.
For tips on how to lengthen the life of your short styles, download The Short Hair Bedside Bible. The steps covered in that eBook will help you get multiple days from one style.
You may think that adding hold to short styles automatically means tons of hairspray. That’s not the case. Too much hairspray, and the wrong type of hairspray will only serve to make your hair hard and brittle. Over doing the hairspray will also lead to dry hair and we all know that’s a no-go.
Maybe you struggle with hair that ends up too stiff to manipulate. Have you ever added product only to find that when you go to wrap your hair at night you can’t even get the comb through it? Or how about this one – you go to wrap your hair at night and it turns into a white flaky mess from the holding product you used. Sound familiar?
I’m going to give you some tips on how you can give your styles some added hold AND still manipulate and moisturize your hair for more than just one day.
Let’s talk about how to properly add hold to short styles to lengthen the life of your styles.
1. You can’t add hold to dirty hair.
First off you want to begin with clean and conditioned hair. Preferably deep conditioned hair, but at least conditioned hair.
You will always get a better result when you begin any short hair style with clean and conditioned hair. Adding hold to short hair is no exception. Once your hair is ready to go, you want to choose the best product for your hair. The hairspray you choose will be dependent on your hair’s density, porosity and thickness. You can read about the difference between density, porosity and thickness in the post I wrote about it.
The product I swear by is a versatile hairspray. It’s Sebastian Shaper. The brand Sebastian Shaper, has different offerings depending on what you’re looking for.
I have low porosity, dense hair that is fine. So, for me, the Sebastian Shaper works. If you have thicker strands, you may benefit more from the Sebastian Shaper Plus. The Plus version is more of a medium hold, while the Shaper provides more of a light hold.
These products are both comb-able. Yes, my word. Deal with it. But, what that means is that the product isn’t tacky and it doesn’t freeze the hair into a cemented style. This is a major plus. You will absolutely be able to remold your hair for wrapping it at night AND you can reshape or re-curl your hair the following day if you want a new style or if you want to add additional curls to your style.
Because the product doesn’t completely coat the hair in a thick layer of product, you are still able to effectively moisturize your hair. What this means for you, is that you can use this product repeatedly (in moderation) and you won’t end up with dry brittle hair that breaks over time.
THE HOW – TO
What you want to do is lightly spray your hair all over after you have broken the mold. Then you go in and curl and style your hair. Once you’re done styling, you can take the Sebastian Shaper and go over your hair one last time with a light mist. Then take your hands and work the product into your hair.
2. There’s more than one way to add hold.
Still sticking with hairspray, you can add hold to short styles without misting the product all over your head. If you want a more concentrated application, you can get it and it’s easier than you ever thought.
THE HOW – TO
Take your small toothed comb and lightly spray the Sebastian Shaper onto the teeth of the comb. Then take the section of hair you are going to curl and comb through the section and chase it with your flat iron.
This works especially well when you create curly or spiked styles. The concentrated application followed with heat, will keep your strands exactly where you want them. It will also keep hairspray away from the parts of your hair that you don’t want to add hold to.
You can also do this in the reverse order. Instead of chasing the section with heat AFTER you apply the hairspray, you can curl the section of hair and then take the comb with hairspray on it and comb through the curled section while it’s still warm.
This method doesn’t give you quite as much hold, but that may be what you’re looking for and it definitely does still work.
3. Add hold to short styles with your hands! How?
Well, this one is more like a hack than anything. But, if you’re in a pinch or a hurry, you can do it.
THE HOW – TO
Take some hairspray and lightly mist the tips of your fingers, then while your fingers are still wet, run them through the section of hair you want to add hold to.
This one is excellent for adding hold to the roots of your hair when you don’t have texture to work with. Read how to use texture when styling your short hair to learn about how to use the in-between relaxer stage to your advantage.
If you’re not due for a relaxer, but you still want your style to stand up or to look voluminous, try this trick, but instead of simply running your fingertips through your hair, place them onto your scalp and lightly agitate the hair on your scalp. Think of it as a light teasing on your scalp. Works great for a little added umph.
So, if you want to add hold to short hairstyles, these tips are how you can easily do it. There will be more posts on how to add hold with products other than hairspray, so be on the lookout for those.
